Cross-vertical benchmarks for AI deployment in service SME back-office functions, drawn from 401 organisations across the UK and EU surveyed January to March 2026. The report covers seven back-office functions (finance and accounts payable, HR and people ops, IT and security, procurement, contracts, knowledge management, internal communications) across six service verticals (professional services, agencies, real estate, healthcare admin, education services, recruitment). For each combination we report adoption rate, dominant tools, median hours recovered per week, and the verticals where adoption lags peer expectations. The report is structured for the operations lead or COO who needs to know how their organisation compares to its peer set, and where the realistic next move is.

The single largest gap in our survey is in procurement automation, where 38% of service SMEs report deploying AI tools and 7% report measurable savings. The other 31% deployed a tool, did not change the procurement workflow, and quietly stopped using the tool within four months. The pattern is consistent: the AI tool deployed without the workflow change is worse than no tool at all because the team now distrusts the category.

How this was researched.

Every claim in this report traces back to a primary source: vendor documentation, first-hand testing, or direct interview. Pricing is verified with each vendor. Where a vendor declined to provide pricing, the report says so. The methodology appendix names every source and notes the limits of what we can confirm.

Reports are AI-drafted and human-edited. Every report passes an originality check before publishing. If it fails, it doesn't ship.
