Five AI reconciliation and categorisation tools tested against a 1,000-transaction test set drawn from anonymised real client books across four practice areas: retail, professional services, hospitality, and light manufacturing. Tools evaluated: Dext, Hubdoc, AutoEntry, Karbon, and Receipt Bank's current product (now part of Dext). We measured per-transaction categorisation accuracy, VAT-code accuracy on edge cases, time per hundred transactions for a senior bookkeeper, and the categories where each tool requires the most human intervention. Pricing is broken down per active client across firm sizes from three to twelve practitioners. Two products are recommended for specific firm profiles. One is flagged as overspend at small-firm scale. The remaining two require integration work that may or may not be worth it depending on what ledger you already use.

Dext got 93.4% of the 1,000 transactions right on first pass. Hubdoc got 87.1%. The 6.3 percentage point gap sounds modest until you do the arithmetic. At a thousand transactions a month, you are reviewing 66 transactions with Dext and 129 transactions with Hubdoc. At a senior bookkeeper's loaded rate of €45 an hour and three minutes per review, that's €4,275 a year of recovered time per client. Multiply by an active book of twenty clients.

Methodology

How this was researched.

Every claim in this report traces back to a primary source: vendor documentation, first-hand testing, or direct interview. Pricing is verified with each vendor. Where a vendor declined to provide pricing, the report says so. The methodology appendix names every source and notes the limits of what we can confirm.

Reports are AI-drafted and human-edited. Every report passes an originality check before publishing. If it fails, it doesn't ship.
